Dear 2015 Graduates: Your Future is SO bright!

Every year, our society places a ridiculous amount of pressure on year 12 students to succeed, at all costs. There’s this assumption that their entire future is determined by their final score (spoiler alert – not true!). This pressure can lead to immense stress, which can cause anything from a facial rash to full blown anxiety. We need to be talking more about all the great things to come, and talking less about failure. Year 12 is not the be-all-end-all; it is just the beginning.

There’re two ways you can choose to look at what lies ahead – either with fear or with excitement. Being able to view things in a positive light is an incredibly useful life skill. This doesn’t mean that you have to always be happy, or you have to accept or ignore the negative aspects of life. Focusing on the good stuff  will have an enormously positive effect on your life, as well as your  general well-being. So instead of stressing about results and course requirements, start to think about all the incredible things you have to look forward to!

Your future’s going to be full of all kind of twists and turns. Here are just a few things to look forward to:

  1. Meeting someone who will change your life.
  2. Meeting someone who’s life you’ll change.
  3. Finding your 1,000th new favourite song.
  4. Making a mistakes (and learning from them).
  5. Falling in love.
  6. Eating the best sandwich you’ve ever had.
  7. Not having your life dictated by a school bell.
  8. Meeting people who think like you.
  9. Meeting people who will challenge the way you think.
  10. Running into old teachers and calling them by their first name just for lols. LOL.
  11. New emojis!
  12. Going out on a school night.
  13. Finding something you’re passionate about.
  14. Creating something, anything.
  15. Travelling to new places
  16. Travelling back to old, familiar places, and seeing it in a new light.
  17. Dancing in a crowd.
  18. Dancing by yourself.
  19. Crying with laughter.
  20. Adopting a pet (for some, that will be a pet rock – for others that will be a lifelong furry companion).
  21. Changing your mind (about a person, a thing, a place, an idea)
  22. Gaining wisdom and experience.
  23. Learning to love yourself more.

Worrying about stuff  is really normal but right now, there’s so much to look forward to.

So remember, if you don’t get into the uni course that you wanted, or you miss out on a job offer, it’s not the end of the world. There will always be new opportunities, new things to learn, and new ways to thrive.
