Everyday Heroines: Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls

Amy Poehler is one awesome lady. You probably know who she is – she’s the star of the US comedy show Parks and Recreation, featured in Mean Girls with Lindsey Lohan as the “Cool Mom” and hosted the Golden Globes with Tina Fey. She’s a comedian, writer, actress – and she’s a smart girl.
Now that last bit might sound a little weird but it’s totally true. Amy is a smart girl and she wants us to celebrate all the smart girls we know. So many girls hide away their cleverness or what makes them unique, because they’re worried about what others will think of them. Amy thinks that this is no good – and plus, we need our smart girls, now more than ever.
Amy created a whole show around this topic and called it Smart Girls At the Party (pretty snappy title huh?). Basically her idea was to bring together stories of girls being real, to help other girls to do the same. Stories about girls who were changing the world – by being themselves.
And these girls are everyday girls, like you. They’re honest and real. They show us that we don’t need to fit into one specific mould. They remind us that we are all different and unique. Smart Girls At the Party share their passions and interests, inspiring others to pursue their own.
You’ll find a few different kinds of clips at Smart Girls. There’s interviews with amazing girls who make stuff, interesting talks with girls from around the world and our favourite, ‘Ask Amy’, where Amy Poehler talks through the trickier things in life like emotions 😮 or exams.
Here’s a taste of a few different Smart Girls clips:
First up! Smart Girls: Girls of the World
Meet Tale. She lives in Sweden. And like most of us, she loves summertime and slumber parties with her friends.
“What makes me interesting as a person is that I am funny, I am crazy and I am almost never sad. I say whatever I think and I say it straight out.”
Next! Smart Girls at the rink: sisters Magnificent, Valiant and Gentle
These sisters are like their own little girl gang. They all love to skate, and they help each other to be their best selves.

So to sum up: Smart Girls At the Party is the best, the end. But in all seriousness, we need more examples of girls being themselves, and being appreciated for who they are. Smart Girls shows us that our best option in life is to be ourselves.

And if you need more inspiration on a regular basis, we really recommend liking Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls on Facebook. This week alone they share info about girls who photograph wild highways across America, girls who make amazing medical discoveries – girl writers, girl scientists, and girl musicians. It’s basically your daily dose of happy.
