Respect - more than just a word.

The Women’s March: a Global Movement

www.womensmarch.com

On the 21st on January 2017, millions of people around the world marched in solidarity for the protection of women’s rights, safety, health, and families. The protesters also advocated for other causes including immigration reform, health care reform, protection of the natural environment, LGBTQI rights, racial justice, freedom of religion, and workers’ rights. The event took place on the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. More than three times as many people attended the protest in Washington, D.C., as attended the Trump inauguration itself.

Originally the protest was organised in Washington, but soon grew into a phenomenal global movement with sister protests being organised in cities all over the world. The march in Washington involved speeches and performances from several incredible women including Gloria Steinem, Ashley Judd, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae, Scarlett Johansson and many more. According to officials behind the Women’s March project there were 673 marches worldwide.

Let’s take a look at some of the incredible photos from all different corners of the globe:

This was more than a few marches. This was not a once-off event. This is a movement. More than 5 million people around the world took to the streets in peaceful demonstrations on all seven continents. That’s more than 5 million people who are prepared to stand up for women’s rights. This was an incredible act of courage, hope, strength and determination. Now it’s time to continue this dedication and unity in the fight for human rights, women’s rights and justice.
